Flights to the Gold Coast

There are two realistic ways to fly into the Gold Coast: land directly at Gold Coast Airport (OOL) in Coolangatta, or fly into Brisbane Airport (BNE) and transfer down by road or rail. Which makes sense depends on where you're flying from and which suburb you're staying in.

Flying directly into Gold Coast Airport (OOL)

Gold Coast Airport is served by domestic routes from most major Australian capital cities, plus a number of international routes (largely to New Zealand and parts of Asia, though exact routes change over time — check current airline schedules directly). Landing here makes the most sense if you're staying in the southern suburbs (Coolangatta, Kirra, Tugun, Currumbin, Palm Beach) — you could be at your accommodation within 10–20 minutes of landing.

Flying into Brisbane Airport (BNE) instead

Brisbane Airport has a far larger range of domestic and international routes than Gold Coast Airport, and is a genuinely viable option even if the Gold Coast is your only destination — particularly if it works out cheaper or more convenient for your specific route. From Brisbane Airport, options include a direct train connection (via Brisbane's domestic/international terminals to the Gold Coast line, with a change), airport shuttle coach services, or rental car/rideshare. Budget at least 90 minutes to 2 hours door-to-door to central Gold Coast suburbs, traffic depending.

Finding cheaper airfares

• Compare both airports: Brisbane and Gold Coast Airport fares can differ noticeably for the same origin city — it's worth checking both before booking.
• Midweek flights are generally cheaper than weekend departures, particularly around school holiday periods.
• Book ahead for peak season (roughly December–January and around Easter) — fares to both airports climb fastest in these windows.
• Set fare alerts through airline sites or comparison tools if your travel dates are flexible — Gold Coast and Brisbane airfares can fluctuate a fair amount even a few weeks out.
