Gold Coast Hinterland

The Gold Coast Hinterland refers to the ranges rising up behind the coastal strip — cooler, greener, and a genuine change of pace from the beach and theme park corridor. It's an easy day trip from anywhere on the coast, and a popular choice for a break in the middle of a longer beach-heavy holiday.

Tamborine Mountain

The closest hinterland destination to the coast, Tamborine Mountain combines rainforest walking tracks with a notable food-and-wine scene — Gallery Walk is a strip of galleries, cafés and cellar doors, and the surrounding national park has several short, well-marked walking tracks through rainforest, including glow-worm sites that operate after dark at certain spots.

Springbrook National Park

Springbrook is more rugged and further inland, known for waterfalls (Purling Brook Falls and Twin Falls among the best known) and long-range lookouts such as the Best of All Lookout, which on a clear day gives views back across the Hinterland and out to the coast. The Natural Bridge — a rock arch with a waterfall flowing through a cave — is one of the more distinctive short walks in the park, also known as a glow-worm site after dark.

Lamington National Park

Further inland again, Lamington is the most serious hiking destination of the three, with longer rainforest trails and a well-known treetop canopy walk near O'Reilly's. It's a bigger day-trip commitment than Tamborine or Springbrook, but rewards it with a genuinely different, ancient-rainforest feel.

Planning a hinterland day

All three areas require a car (or a booked tour) — there's no tram or direct public transport link from the coast. Mornings tend to be clearer for the lookout points; afternoons can bring cloud or light rain, particularly in summer. Bring a light layer regardless of the season — the Hinterland runs noticeably cooler than the coast.
