SUBURB GUIDE

Helensvale

Not a beach suburb — Helensvale sits inland at the northern end of the tram line, and it's built its reputation as a practical, theme-park-close base instead.

Helensvale doesn't have a beach, and that's the point for a lot of visitors who stay there — it sits inland at the northern tip of the G:link tram line, a short drive from the Oxenford and Coomera theme park corridor, and it tends to be noticeably cheaper than the beachfront suburbs further south.

Why visitors base themselves here

Helensvale is popular with families doing a theme-park-heavy trip, largely thanks to a cluster of holiday parks and budget-friendly motels offering cabins and powered sites at a fraction of Surfers Paradise apartment rates. It's also directly on the Queensland Rail line, giving a straightforward train connection north to Brisbane.

Getting to the parks

Movie World, Wet'n'Wild-area attractions and Dreamworld are all a short drive from Helensvale — generally quicker than from the central beach suburbs, since you're skipping the coastal traffic corridor. Most parks also run shuttle pickups that include Helensvale on their route.

Should you stay here?

If theme parks are the main focus of your trip and you don't mind a drive to reach the beach, Helensvale is one of the more cost-effective bases on the coast. If beach time is the priority, you're better off further south or east.

Getting there

Helensvale sits at the tram network's northern terminus, and also has its own Queensland Rail train station — one of the few Gold Coast suburbs with both. It's about a 35–40 minute drive from Gold Coast Airport.
